I’ve put together my top 10 sites like Craigslist here to sell things and make money from.

If you didn’t know, there are probably around 30+ websites like Craigslist on the internet to sell things, advertise, and do personal things like look for love on.

Why you want to stick with the popular Craigslist alternatives

The MAIN reason why you really want to stick with the most popular Craigslist alternatives is because they have the most people searching for things, buying things, and interacting on them.

Remember, these are market places where buyers and sellers meet to perform transaction. This doesn’t mean that you won’t succeed with a more obscure website to advertise/sell things on, but it’s more likely that you wont simply because there are LESS people browsing around those websites to buy and sell things.

Online market places like Craigslist exist to put buyers and sellers together. So you definitely want to be where the people are.

Craigslist is the MOST popular place online to perform these types of transactions. However, for one reason or another, it’s not always the best place. Perhaps you aren’t getting the replies you expect or you have been banned, or you’re looking for additional places to advertise.

Free vs Paid websites like Craigslist

Craigslist is free – we all know that. There are many alternatives to Craigslist that are also free. If that’s what you’re looking for, then stick with that. However, you should also consider exploring paid options. They give you more tools and provide more organization. It’ something to consider, especially when you are looking to sell a lot of items or whatnot.

Top 10 Websites Like Craigslist

1. Kijiji

Kijiji is my favorite place to advertise. In fact, I prefer it over Craigslist. Kijiji is pretty much the same as Craigslist in almost every way. It’s free for a basic listing. You take photos, upload them, and choose which are you want to advertise in. Your item will show up at the top for your given item description and it will get moved down as newer items show up.

It’s 100% free which is awesome. You can pay to create premium listings, which help make your ad more visible, such as pinning it to the top.

I feel like most people don’t go this route. What they do is simply put up another ad about their item when it gets too far down the list. I see this happen a lot for popular items like iphones for example. These types of items where people are throwing up new ads on every hour don’t last long on the first page of Kijiji.

In any case, the first place I recommend you to try is Kijiji. They are super popular in the USA and Canada – and my top recommend alternative to Craigslist.

2. eBay

I’m sure you heard of eBay. I used to log on every single day to look for deals and steals. There are tons of people doing this every day as well.

eBay is a paid place to sell your items. They take a decent cut from what you sell – which really sucks. However, it’s an organized place to buy and sell things, and buyers and sellers are protected from certain issues like fraud and non-payment.

I think eBay is a good solution you should look into if you are selling a lot of items. It’s really hard to sell a lot of items on free websites like Craigslist because it’s hard to keep track of everything, and it’s way more tedious to put up ads on these places. eBay makes it easier for sure.

Also, if you are selling more expensive items, eBay could be a better place for you. You will not have to meet up with anyone in person either – because you would ship items out to buyers in an eBay transaction.

3. Classified Ads

Classified Ads is an excellent free place to buy, sell, find jobs, find a place to rent, and more.

It’s really popular and there are a ton of people using it. I like that it isn’t overly spammy looking and has a nice simple layout to search for all the things you want. Pretty much every category is popular and has people listing things. If you’re a seller, you might thing this is bad because there is competition. But really, it’s a great thing because it means a lot of people are using it which means buyers will go there to find things.

The personal section of Classified Ads is awesome. If that’s what you’re looking for, check it!

4. Backpage

Backpage is an absolute monster in the online world of buying, selling, personals, etc. I like it a lot for its word wide appeal. On the front page you’ll see a list of all major cities in each continent. After picking your city, you’ll be directed to your city’s advertising page where you can click on whatever link you’re interested in. If you are selling, it’s just as easy to sell things on it. Set up your account and then start selling.

5. Free Ads Time

Another great local place to get free advertising for your items. It works just like Backpage that I mentioned above. This also has a world wide appeal where you can list items and look for items for sale no matter where you are in the world. Free Ads Time is not as popular as Backpage but it’s still a quality place.

6. Varage Sale

I like Varage Sale a lot because they list their items by photos instead of text headlines like most selling websites do. Varage Sale is strictly a place to buy and sell things locally. There are no personals or job seeking or business opportunities here.

Using Varage sale is one of the easiest websites to navigate too. At the very top is a search bar where you type in the item you are looking to buy. And then beside it is the city you want to look in. And then you hit the search button. The buyer will find listings of the items for sale. The listings are all pictures as I mentioned before. Which is what I love about this so much because it gives buyers a visual of the item.

As a seller, it’s awesome because people get to see what you are selling immediately. So to succeed on Varage Sale, it’s really about uploading great images of your item for sale. It will catch people’s attention and will make them more likely to click on your ad. Whereas other sites like Craigslist will usually rely on your to type in a descriptive headline that catches attention – which not everyone is good at. But most of us can take a good picture of something!

7. Gumtree

Gumtree is a popular online website to do a lot of different things. It includes things like finding jobs, finding services, and of course, buying and selling things.

It’s a classified place with more to it. As far as purely selling things, it’s not the biggest place for that. However, since a lot of people visit Gumtree to do a lot of different things, they have visitors and that’s usually a good sign of where you want to be.

8. Etsy

Etsy could be the perfect market place for you depending on what you are selling. If you are selling arts and crafts type of things, or hand made goodies, Etsy is likely the best place for you to advertise these things. This is the best online market place to find unique items for sale like this. So you definitely want to be here selling your items.

Etsy is a paid place to sell items. Again, it’s like eBay in the sense that you get a lot of additional help selling your items along with protection. If you are selling a decent volume of hand crafted type items, Etsy is definitely where it’s at.

9. eBid

A very popular online place to sell things is eBid. The coolest thing about eBid is that there is no listing fees like eBay Рand it functions like eBay to a degree too. This is really good for sellers obviously, because you will make more profit when you sell things. Millions of people use eBid to find things to buy each month a well, so the traffic is there too.

eBid works like eBay in that you can list things as an auction style where people will bid on items for sale or you can list items at a fixed price to buy. It’s as close of an alternative to eBay as you’re probably gonna find anywhere – but free.

10. Amazon

Who hasn’t heard of Amazon? Just the most popular place online to buy and sell things right. They got there for a reason! I like Amazon because they have the best platform to buy and sell things for buyers and sellers. In my opinion of course.

People trust Amazon because they trust the brand. People simply buy things on Amazon simply because they trust the market place. As a seller, this is really important because it means you will make sales much more easily when you are a part of this trusted market place.

Amazon is of course not free to list items for sale. If you’re looking for a purely free place this isn’t it. However, Amazon reaches people all over the world. They have an enormous market place of buyers and sellers. You can sell a lot of different things on Amazon too – however, they aren’t too big on the used market, and it’s only popular for things like used books. But if you are selling mostly new items you can do great here (Not saying you can’t sell used things on Amazon – but typically, there are other used market places where you may have better luck).
